Verge flashings
A verge flashing – in Slovak záveterná lišta – closes off the roof at the gable, the sloping edge that does not end in a gutter. It protects the edge of the covering from wind that would lift it, and covers the ends of the battens from the rain.

Two types
| Type | Where it sits | Use |
|---|---|---|
| under-covering verge flashing | under the edge of the covering, on the verge board or battens | stops the wind lifting the covering and leads water into the gutter (MASLEN) |
| over-covering verge flashing | on the covering up to the first rib, running down the face of the verge board | fitted after the covering, covers the edge from above |
The installation guides say which type belongs with a given roof covering. On tile-effect metal roofing the two are often combined.
Installation
- Verge board. The roof edge is trued up with a verge board (barge board) or an auxiliary verge batten. Ruukki notes that small differences in the roof dimensions can be taken up by the verge board.
- Fixing. MASLEN specifies fixing an under-covering verge flashing with 4.8 × 20 mm screws into the verge board or the battens. Over-covering flashings are fixed with 4.8 × 20 mm stitching screws at roughly 300 mm centres.
- Laps run down the slope, with the upper piece over the lower one.
- At the ridge the flashing is finished so that it meets the end of the ridge cap.
- At the eaves the flashing ends over the gutter, so water runs off it into the gutter, not down the facade.
What to watch
- Wind suction is greatest at the verge. In its guide for standing seam roofing, Ruukki requires closer fixing of the covering in the perimeter zone of the roof (at least 1 m wide); the verge flashing is the last line of protection for this zone.
- The flashing must overlap the face of the verge board and end in a drip fold, otherwise water gets into the board and it starts to rot.
- With external insulation on the gable wall, allow for the thickness of the insulation – a flashing measured before the insulation goes on will be too short.
- The underlay should lap over the gable; for verge trims Ruukki gives a lap of the underlay of at least 200 mm beyond the plane of the wall (in its guide for standing seam roofing).
Cost
Plechy Majer (14 April 2026) lists a verge flashing for its metal roofing at €10 per m incl. VAT (materials). Trims made to measure are priced by girth and material; labour is charged together with the roof flashing.
