Sheet-metal roofing products and flashing for roofs and buildings

What a properly flashed chimney looks like, why a window sill has to project beyond the facade, and what a metre of gutter costs in galvanised steel, titanium-zinc or copper. We explain each sheet-metal component, material and installation detail, and every price comes with a date and a source. When you are ready, we help you put together an enquiry that a Slovak sheet-metal roofer (klampiar) will understand at first reading.

Section through a chimney on a pitched roof A chimney passes through the roof. On the downslope side the front apron flashing lies on the roof covering; on the upslope side the back gutter runs under the covering. The underlay is turned up the chimney, and the top edges of the flashing are covered by a counter-flashing strip with sealant. ≥ 150 underlay up ≥ 150 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 direction of fall ←

The most common jobs

These are the jobs you are most likely to meet on family houses and blocks of flats. For each one: what it includes and what to keep an eye on.

JobWhat it includesWhat to watch
New chimney flashingremoving the old flashing, connecting the underlay, front, side and back flashings, counter-flashing, sealantthe back of the chimney and the movement strip; sealant is no substitute for a proper metal lap
Replacing gutters and downpipesremoval, brackets, gutters laid to fall, hoppers, bends, downpipes, pipe clips, connection to the gullysize to suit the roof area, fall towards the outlet, expansion joints on long gutters
Exterior sills with external wall insulationmeasuring after the insulation is on, manufacture, fitting under the frame, end caps30–40 mm projection beyond the finished facade, fall outwards, expansion gap at the end caps
Parapet copingbacking board, clips, coping laid to fall, joints that allow movementfall towards the roof, drip nose projecting beyond the facade, waterproofing under the metal
Flashings with a new roof coveringunderlay drip flashing, eaves flashing, valleys, verge flashings, wall and penetration flashingsthe order of installation and laps that follow the flow of water
Repairing gutters and flashingssealing joints, replacing a hopper or bend, correcting the fall, repaintingwhether a repair still makes sense, or replacing the whole run is better value

Overview of sheet-metal roofing work

Materials

The gutter prices are for the same component in six materials from one Slovak manufacturer, so the comparison is fair. We give a service life only where the material manufacturer states one or it can be derived from a standard.

Choosing the right solution

The most expensive material is not automatically the best. A flashing has to suit the roof covering, the other metals on the roof and how long you want to be left in peace.

If you cannot judge some of this yourself, say so in your enquiry. The roofer weighs up the same things you do.

Durability
Galvanised steel is protected only by a thin layer of zinc; paint extends its life. Titanium-zinc and copper form their own patina, and their service life is quoted in decades up to a century.
Cost
On the same gutter, copper costs roughly ten times as much as galvanised steel. Labour costs much the same for every material, but copper and titanium-zinc tend to take more work, for example because they are soldered.
Location
Urban, industrial and mountain environments speed up zinc corrosion. Ruukki halves its warranty periods for installations more than 900 m above sea level.
Roof type
Metal roofing, clay tiles and flat roofs each have their own details. The metal used for flashings should match the roof covering or be galvanically compatible with it.
Maintenance
Cleaning the gutters, checking the sealant at the chimney and repairing damaged paint will extend the life of the flashing more than a dearer material left unmaintained.

Choose the type of job and add details about the building. The page turns them into a clear text that you can copy or open in your own email app. Nothing is sent or stored on our side; you attach photos to your own email.

You can also send the enquiry straight to us at dopyt@klampiarskevyrobky.sk. We will reply with general guidance and, where we can, suggest what kind of firm to look for in your area. We can reply in English, but local firms may only speak Slovak. We do not install anything ourselves and have no partner network.
