When do gutters need replacing?
Gutters are not replaced because of their age but because of their condition and how well they work. An old titanium-zinc gutter may be perfectly fine, while a five-year-old galvanised one below a copper roof is already due for replacement.

Replacement makes sense when
| Sign | Why it is not a repair job |
|---|---|
| corrosion along the whole length, not just in spots | every repair just moves the problem a few metres along |
| the gutter keeps overflowing in heavy rain even though it is clean | it is too small for the roof area, or a downpipe is missing; compare with the nomogram |
| brackets rusty or bent along most of the length | the gutter will not hold its fall |
| almost every joint leaks | the seals and the sheet are both ageing |
| the covering or eaves are being redone, or the facade insulated | the scaffolding is already up; new gutters will cost less now than later |
| copper above a galvanised gutter | the gutter will keep corroding even after a repair |
A repair is enough when
- one joint or one hopper is leaking,
- water stands because of one displaced bracket,
- a downpipe or gully is blocked,
- the paint is damaged only locally.
Approximate service life
Plain galvanised gutter: in an urban environment the Z275 zinc coating is used up in roughly 9–29 years (calculated from ISO 9223). Pre-painted: manufacturers give warranties of around 30 years. Titanium-zinc: VMZINC gives more than 50 years for gutters. Details: Materials.
Costs
You can cost a replacement using the article What does a new gutter system cost? According to Numiq (14 May 2026), repairs are charged at €20–40 per hour excl. VAT; with repeated repairs the total soon approaches the price of a new run.
