Eaves gutters – dimensions, brackets, fall and expansion
The gutter is the longest part of a rainwater system and the one that suffers most from temperature, snow and leaves. This sheet sums up the figures that matter for it – from profile dimensions to expansion joints.

Gutters are designated by their girth – in Slovak catalogues rš, the width of the strip of sheet they are folded from. KJG gives the following gutter widths for half-round gutters (dimensions and tolerances to EN 612):
| girth (mm) | 200 | 250 | 280 | 333 | 400 | 500 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| gutter width Ø d1 (mm) | 80 | 105 | 127 | 153 | 192 | 250 |
On family houses, girths of 250, 280 and 333 are the most common.
Thicknesses by material
| Material | Gutter thickness (KJG) |
|---|---|
| galvanised steel, pre-painted galvanised steel | 0.55 mm (also 0.50 and 0.45 mm) |
| copper | 0.55 mm |
| titanium-zinc | 0.65 and 0.70 mm |
| pre-painted aluminium | 0.70 mm |
| stainless steel | 0.50 mm |
Brackets
| Type of bracket | Where it is fixed | Note |
|---|---|---|
| rafter bracket | to the rafter or boarding under the covering | fitted before the covering |
| fascia bracket | to the fascia board | can also be added to a finished roof |
| over-roof bracket | onto the covering, on some types of roof | depending on the system |
With titanium-zinc and copper, coated brackets are used so that steel does not touch the premium metal. According to KJG, bracket spacing follows the rafter spacing; in heavy snow conditions, ask the manufacturer about closer spacing.
Fall
KJG: fix the brackets with a fall of 1–5 mm/m. Lindab: a minimum gutter fall of 5 mm/m in its warranty conditions. On long gutters, a double fall to two downpipes or a downpipe in the middle is often chosen – this shortens the run and reduces the height differences.
Expansion
| Material | Max. distance between expansion joints, girth up to 500 mm | girth over 500 mm |
|---|---|---|
| galvanised steel, titanium-zinc, copper, stainless steel | 15 m | 10 m |
| aluminium | 12 m | 8 m |
From an external angle or the start of the gutter half the value applies, from an internal angle a quarter – angles are fixed points (KJG).
Prices
KJG recommended retail prices, price list from 11 August 2026, € per m excl. VAT, girth 250 / girth 333: galvanised steel 3.43 / 4.20; pre-painted galvanised steel 6.74 / 7.93; pre-painted aluminium 6.85 / 8.70; stainless steel 10.55 / 12.02; titanium-zinc 10.68 / 13.49; copper 36.52 / 45.59. Installation mistakes
- gutter with no fall or a back-fall – water stands, freezes in winter and splits the joints,
- covering does not overhang far enough – in a downpour water runs behind the gutter; MASLEN gives an overhang of 1/3 to 1/2 of the gutter width,
- cutting with an angle grinder instead of a hacksaw – KJG’s installation guide expressly forbids it,
- joints with no expansion allowance on long runs,
- brackets of a different, uncoated metal with titanium-zinc and copper.
