Gutter repair

Most gutter problems are not the end of their service life, but a blockage, a bracket that has moved or a leaking joint. Before you decide to replace them, it pays to find out exactly what is failing.

Diagnosis by symptom

Symptom Possible cause Solution
water spills over the front edge of the gutter blocked hopper or downpipe, downpipe too small for the area clear it; if it keeps happening, add a downpipe
water stands in part of the gutter bent or displaced bracket, back-fall realign the brackets to a string line, set the fall
drips from a joint leaking union, damaged rubber seal, joint without expansion allowance torn apart replace the seal or union, add an expansion piece
water runs behind the gutter down the facade covering does not overhang into the gutter, no eaves flashing adjust the eaves flashing, or move the gutter
rust patches and pinholes galvanised steel at the end of its life, run-off from copper, damaged paint repair locally only if corrosion is in spots; otherwise replace the run
downpipe drips at a bend bend fitted against the direction of flow swap the order of the pieces
wet plinth by the downpipe blocked connection below ground, no shoe clear the gully, add an access point
gutter torn off in winter ice and snow, no snow guards, weak brackets repair the brackets, consider snow guards on the roof

Repair or replace?

A repair makes sense when the problem is local: one joint, one hopper, a few brackets. Replacement is more sensible when:

  • corrosion is not in spots but along the whole length,
  • the gutter is simply too small for the roof area,
  • the brackets are rotten or rusty along most of the length,
  • the roof covering is being replaced or the facade insulated anyway (the scaffolding is already up).

More detail in the article When to replace gutters.

Principles for repairs

  • use parts from the same manufacturer and in the same material as the original system,
  • do not cut the sheet with an angle grinder (KJG, Lindab and Ruukki all exclude it),
  • on pre-painted sheet, touch up cuts and scratches with touch-up paint,
  • on soldered systems (titanium-zinc, copper), leave the repair to a roofer with soldering equipment,
  • carry out a water test after the repair.

Cost

Numiq (14 May 2026) gives €20–40 per hour excl. VAT for repairing existing flashings, and flavio.sk (May 2025) €10–25 per m for fitting a rainwater system. With small repairs, a large part of the price is travel and access (ladder, platform).
