Sheet-metal roofing work

A sheet-metal roofer – in Slovak klampiar – folds, cuts, joins and fits sheet metal. On an ordinary house that means roof, chimney and parapet flashings, window sills and gutters; on industrial buildings, cladding and the trims for trapezoidal sheeting. This sheet helps you specify the work and check the result.

How to proceed

  1. Describe the job – what, where, dimensions, material, photos. The enquiry builder and the site checklist will help.
  2. Ask two or three firms for quotes using the same brief, so that they are comparable.
  3. Compare the line items, not the total – material and thickness, removal, disposal, scaffolding, travel, warranty.
  4. Coordinate dates with the follow-on trades – sills after the insulation, gutters before the covering, chimney together with the covering.
  5. Sign off the work using the checklist below.

How to choose a roofer

We do not publish a list of firms or ratings. When choosing, ask:

  • for references from similar jobs, ideally with an address where you can go and look,
  • whether they hold a trade licence (živnostenské oprávnenie) for sheet-metal roofing work (you can check this in the trade register, živnostenský register),
  • what material, from which manufacturer, they will use and whether they know its installation guide,
  • how they will deal with a specific awkward detail (the back of the chimney, gutter expansion, the sill projection),
  • what warranty they give on the work and in what form.

Local firms may only speak Slovak, so a clearly written brief with dimensions and photos helps.

Sign-off checklist

  • laps follow the direction of flow, the higher sheet over the lower one
  • the gutter falls to the outlet and water does not stand anywhere (water test)
  • there are no screws or nails in surfaces where water flows
  • at the chimney there is a counter-flashing and sealant; the back of the chimney is dealt with
  • window sills project 30–40 mm beyond the finished facade
  • there are no scratches in the paint, cut edges are touched up, swarf has been swept off
  • long components have expansion joints
  • nowhere is copper above galvanised steel, titanium-zinc or aluminium

Prices

Labour price ranges with dates and sources are on the Sheet-metal roofing prices sheet.

Permission

Under Section 18(5)(a) of Building Act No. 25/2025 Coll., replacing flashings and the roof covering needs neither a decision on the building plan nor a notification; the exceptions (appearance from public space, fire safety, stability, listed monuments) and heritage areas are explained on the Flashing sheet.

Local information
