Made-to-measure flashings

A non-standard trim, a parapet coping of unusual width, a cornice or dormer flashing – all of it can be folded to measure. But the result will only be as good as the specification. This sheet shows what has to be on the drawing.

What the specification must include

A folded item is specified by its cross-section (profile) and its length. To make it, the roofer needs the following:

Item Example Why
shape of the profile with each side dimensioned 40 / 260 / 60 / 15 mm these add up to the girth
fold angles 90°, 93° (3° fall), 135° drip nose without angles the fall is unclear
which face is visible “colour side up” on pre-painted sheet it decides which way the sheet is turned
material and thickness pre-painted galvanised steel 0.55 mm, titanium-zinc 0.7 mm affects stiffness and price
colour and finish RAL 7016 matt colours differ between manufacturers
lengths and quantities 4 × 3,000 mm, 1 × 1,850 mm for expansion and transport
corners and ends 2 external corners, 1 stop end on the left corners are made separately
fixing method clips, screws into the vertical leg affects the shape of the fold that engages the fixing
Half-round gutter profile and girth Top: cross-section of a half-round gutter with its bead and back fold, dimensioned across the opening. Bottom: the same sheet laid out flat; its length is the girth (developed width). gutter width (e.g. 153 for girth 333) bead back fold girth = developed width of the strip (e.g. 333)

Girth and waste

The girth (rozvinutá šírka, rš) is the sum of the lengths of all the sides of the profile. It determines how many strips fit across the width of a sheet or coil. If your girth comes out at 340 mm and the manufacturer cuts from 1,250 mm coil, three strips fit and the rest is waste, which shows up in the price. Sometimes it pays to adjust the profile by a few millimetres so that four will fit.

Piece lengths

Long folded pieces expand in the heat. For parapet copings PREFA gives piece lengths of up to 3 m for a girth up to 500 mm and up to 1 m for a girth of 600 to 800 mm; anything wider is done as seamed roofing. On site the pieces are joined in a way that allows movement. More detailed figures are given for parapet copings and gutters.

How to measure correctly

  1. Measure what is actually built, not the drawings. After external insulation the wall is somewhere other than the drawings say.
  2. Measure in several places – walls and cornices are not straight. For window sills ZOFI recommends measuring the reveal on the left and on the right and taking the larger figure.
  3. Photograph the detail with a tape measure in the shot.
  4. For awkward details, leave the measuring to the roofer. Roofers who measure up themselves are responsible for their own measuring mistakes.

Common mistakes in specifications

  • no fall – a flat surface on a parapet or cornice holds water,
  • the drip nose does not project far enough beyond the facade, so water runs down the render,
  • inside and outside dimensions are mixed and it is unclear which are which,
  • the visible colour face is not specified,
  • corners are not ordered and get “made up” on site from cut pieces.

You can paste the finished specification into the enquiry builder and attach the drawing to your email.
